Misguided Motivation

As most of you know, Dumb Little Man is one of our favorite blogs. Recently, a guest writer wrote a really great article about the dangers of misguided motivation.

We talk so much about how to get motivation, and about the benefits that we rarely cover how dangerous it can be if misused. Sometimes we become so focused on what motivates us that we lose site of the big picture. If we focus on the material goal instead of the ongoing process of self improvement we will never really be happy. There will always b another goal, another level, another thing we want. It’s an easy trap to fall into.

Kevin Geary compares this trap to his martial arts students, and it is a great analogy. They often become focused on getting the next belt, on just doing the things it takes to get there. Once they hit it, they just start craving the next belt. Instead, they need to focus on self improvement, on getting better every day. On the benefits that their practice gives them in terms of focus, stamina, etc…never just on the belt.

It’s a good read. Check it out at http://www.dumblittleman.com/2008/04/how-misguided-motivation-can-prevent.html
