What is the difference between a poor person and a rich person? I doubt you would be surprised if I told you that rich people think differently. What good does that do you?
“Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”, by T Harv Eker is a wonderful work that explains how you can learn how to think like a millionaire. Eker’s style is exceptionally clear and pulls no punches. Unlike many similar works, his tone is almost conversational. While reading it, you almost feel like you are having a chat in your living room with an old friend rather than listening to a lecture in an auditorium.
In the first part of the book, Eker invites you to review the lessons about money, wealth, and success that you absorbed during childhood. Most of us are totally unaware of the effect these lessons have. But if think about it for just a moment, you quickly realize how much sense this makes. We all have to learn about money from someplace, and it sure wasn’t in school.
The good news about these lessons, which Eker refers to as “programming”, is that we can change them. We all have an extraordinary gift to become aware of our programming, and once we are aware we can change it. These realizations are really what separate the poor and middle class from the wealthy.
In the second part of the book, Eker introduces is to more appropriate, more empowering “files” to replace the old way of thinking with.
1) Rich people believe “I create my life”; poor people believe “life happens to me”
2) Rich people play the money game to win. Poor people play the money game to not loose.
3) Rich people are committed to being rich. Poor people wish to be rich.
4) Rich people think big. Poor people think small.
5) Rich people focus on opportunities. Poor people focus on obstacles.
6) Rich people admire other rich and successful people. Poor people resent rich and successful people.
7) Rich people associate with positive, successful people. Poor people associate with negative unsuccessful people.
Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their value. Poor people think negatively about selling and promotion.
9) Rich people are bigger than their problems. Poor people are smaller than their problems.
10) Rich people are excellent receivers. Poor people are poor receivers.
11) Rich people choose to get paid based on results. Poor people choose to get paid based on time.
12) Rich people think “both!” Poor people think “either/or”.
13) Rich people focus on their net worth. Poor people focus on their working income.
14) Rich people manage their money well. Poor people mismanage their money well.
15) Rich people have their money work hard for them. Poor people work hard for money.
16) Rich people act in spite of fear. Poor people let fear stop them.
17) Rich people constantly learn and grow. Poor people think they already know.
At first glance, these are pretty simple and you have probably heard them before. But T Harv Eker’s style really makes them sink in. “Secrets” helps you become aware of what you are thinking when you use your money, and once you become aware of how your past programming affects your current thoughts and actions you can change them.
A mentor of mine once told me that big decisions are easy, but it’s the little day to day decisions that really make the difference in your life. For example, it is easy to decide that I want to have a secure, pleasant retirement…but it is much harder to remember to not spend that extra $5 on coffee and instead use it to save money in an IRA. The first decision is just a pipedream, but the second one is the type of thinking that T Harv Eker is teaching you in his book.
It is important to remember that Eker did not intend to write a how to book. There is little practical advice in here. Rather, he is helping you get to the root of things. He doesn’t treat you like an idiot; he knows that in today’s society we already know that we need to save, that we need to invest. He is focusing on why we do not do the things we know we need to do.
As an added bonus, each copy of “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” comes with a certificate good for 2 tickets to one of T Harv Eker’s Millionaire Mind Intensive seminars. These are fantastic programs, which really drive home the lessons in a way no book can do. This bonus is more than worth the cost of the book alone.
I highly recommend “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” to anyone looking to start their journey to financial freedom. This book is basic, easy to understand, and really resonates with you. It builds a solid foundation that you can then build upon with other works.
