Steve Pavlina runs one of the most populare personal development site on the net. He recently posted an article about 30 Day Trials.
This is a powerful technique to drive change. When you are facing a major change, be it healthier eating, exercising, or anything else, it can be daunting. Doubt enters your mind, you believe you have to force yourself to do it. This is setting you up for failure…the first time you hit a setback then you’ll reinforce the doubt and create a belief that you just cant do it.
In other words, you are setting up a situation where either you win or you lose. You either adopt the new habit 100% of the time forever and ever or you are a failure. That may not make sense to you, but it is what is going on inside your subconcious.

A better way is to commit to a trial. Dont view it as permanent, your just going to give it a try. If you dont like it, you can quit after 30 days. The reason this works is because it takes a lot of the pressure off of you.
Also, if you do something 30 days in a row it almost always become a habit. The neuropathways are built up, it just seems “right”. So when it is time to keep going, it gets easier and easier to do that.
I would recommend that after your thirty day trial you commit to a 90-day trial. The reasoning is the same, but the 90 day trial will wipe out any stubborn resistance and DEFINATELY make things a habit.
