The Law of Attraction

I recently purchased the audiobook version of “The Secret”. I am a big fan of audiobooks, I listen to them throughout the day. They are a big part of my strategy for taking in something new (i’ll do another post about that, sometime soon). Anyway, for those of you who aren’t famaliar with it, “The Secret” is based on “The Law of Attraction” which in its simplist form is “Like attracts like, and what we think about and how we think about defines what we get”.
There are parts of “The Secret” that I don’t agree with, to be honest. But I do believe in the Law of Attraction. Have you ever noticed how lucky people always have good luck? There is a guy I work with who wins EVERY contest we have. I am not talking about sales contests here, where if you make the most sales you win. I am talking random drawings. His name is ALWAYS one of the ones drawn. It is uncanny. The universe literally drops the most amazing opportunities into his lap. He expects to win, he expects good things to happen unexpectadly (sounds like an oxymoron, but think about it)…so lo and behold they do.
On the other hand, bad things tend to happen to negative people. People who want to sit around and complain never lack for topics. I dont know if this is the universal mind, God, the universe, your higher self, or juse a self fulfilling prophecy. You know what? I don’t give a darn either. So long as it works, why try to dissect it?
What really suprised me is how common this idea is in basically ANY self help, personal growth material. Robert Kiyosaki, in Rich Dad Poor Dad hit on it too. I like his explanation, because I think it appeals to the more rational minds. He desribes a scene where he is a boy, and his “Rich Dad” explains that most peoples thinking means the only solution is changing someone ELSE. And when you do that, you give up. You close your mind off, you give up any power you have because you can’t change other people…just yourself. That is why you have to focus on your own thinking, your own actions.
You have two ways of looking at the events that happen to you. You can assume you brought them into your life, and figure our what you did or what thoughts led you here. You can grow, adapt, change, and overcome from this point of view.
Or you can assume the universe is randome, and that you have no control and life just happens to you. What a horrible way to exist.
There really isn’t much room for grey here, but most of try to live in the gray area because we are just as afraid of responsability as we are all the bad things that may happen. I know how I want to live my life, how about you?
